Version 2.2 of Backup Chunker was released today with the following changes:

Added option to disable copying NTFS encryption attribute.
Added ability to create a log file from the command line parameters.
Minor bug fixes.

If you are using the previous version, just choose "Check for newer version" to update automatically.

Scheduled Backups

You can create scheduled backups that execute automatically at specified times. To do this you will need to add a task into the windows Task Scheduler (found in Administrative Tools) that launches Backup Chunker at the times you specify.

Added preview / execute of backups using command line parameters. Using command line parameters can fully automate backups.

Version 2.0 of Backup Chunker was released today with the following changes:

Added CD/DVD burning ability. Now you can synchronize to CD and DVD media. Also through multiple sessions, files can be added or deleted when necessary even from write-once CDs and DVDs.
Complete wide string filename support.
Many improvements on WebDAV transactions.
Better support for Windows Vista.
Minor bug fixes.

Backup Chunker 1.1 Released

Backup Chunker 1.1 has been released. This version has the following changes:

Added encryption to the index file that is saved in the same folder as the chunks (the chunk.lst file). The encryption used is AES.
Less use of temporary files and less free space need.
Minor bug fixes.

Simple backup of files to archives

For beginners that would like to backup a folder full of files to a few compressed archives (chunks), here is a starting point.

This simple project needs two locations:

1) A location that is the source (the computer itself and the folder you want)

2) The target location, which in this case is the compressed files in a single folder.

You can create this project very simply using the New Project wizard. In the first page select the folder you want to back-up. In the second page, select the folder where you want to store the compressed archives, and make sure you select "Backup to zip archives". Continue reading the wizard until you click finish.

You are all set! No changes need to be done from the "Locations Setup" page or the "Folders selection" page.

But for the curious, please do take a look at how the wizard did setup the two pages. About the two locations, see above points 1 & 2. And in the "Folder Selection" page notice the following:

- My Documents
........My Computer -> c:\documents and settings\harry
........Target -> c:\zips

The above mean that the "My Documents" folder, is found:

* in the "My Computer" location under the specified folder
* In the "Target" location in chunks (notice the green background) that are stored in the specified folder.

If you go to the "Locations Setup" page, notice that in the "Target" location, the "Use compressed archives" is set. If you want, change additional settings here, like the format or default size.

Secure file deletion

Backup Chunker uses temporary files for some tasks like compressing or extracting archives, when downloading etc.

These files are saved by default in the user temporary folder.

After the task is done, BC will delete these files. By default secure deletion is not enabled, however you can enable this item from the File / Program options dialog.

With secure deletion, a secure 10-pass deletion method is used.

If you are running out of space on your computer hard disk, read this!

Backup Chunker uses temporary files for some tasks like compressing or extracting archives, when downloading etc.

These files are saved by default in the user temporary folder. If you have been running out of space, and just bought a new hard disk (for example drive d:), then you might need to change the temporary folder.

Create a folder like d:temp, and from Backup Chunkers' File / Program options dialog select the new folder as "temporary folder".

Note that you can use the same folder in other programs also that allow you to set-up the path.
